Semblants and Sinthome
VIIth Congress of the World Association of Psychoanalysis

Second evening of Silicet at the ECF, Wednesday, June 3, 2009

The second preparatory evening of the Congess of the WAP, « Semblants and Sinthomes », with it’s guest speakers, Nathalie Georges and François Regnault, was placed under the sign of The Human Comedy.

So it was by the light of Balzac’s magic lantern that we saw the diverse forms of a rippling make-believe come to life in the troubled swirl of feminine and masculine masks, like the ascents, bound to the fall, of characters who watch the fineries of a world that pivots on itself tumble, one after the other, to reveal its « reverse » [envers]. For all that, this make-believe that « only expresses itself out of truth », as Lacan insisted, cannot, in this world of Balsac’s that has become a temporal reference, be reduced to illusions destined to pure loss. A ruin emptied of its mundane course in the end, still holds, as we were reminded during the course of the conversation, « all the majesty of things destroyed ». Whether make-believe-characters or sinthome-characters, evoked at one point as beings that are all at the act, without any subjective wavering, Balsac’s creations make a fertile encounter with lacanian concepts, and the welcome pas de deux that formed there between litterary and psychoanalytical discourses was proof of this.
